HAVANA IN THE AMERICAS: URBAN COMPARISONS AND TRANSNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

 Thursday, June 15 from 9h00 to 11h00

MILC, S308

Organization: Violaine Jolivet (CÉRIUM - Université de Montréal) and Laurine Chapon (IHEAL CREDA - Université Sorbonne Nouvelle)

Proposition

If Havana is an atypical city, often symbolizing the socialist experience in the Americas since the 1959 Revolution, it is also, historically and politically, a key center of geopolitical and cultural relations that cross the American continent and the world. Havana, since the beginning of the revolutionary process and the urban reform that abolished real estate speculation, has also been transformed by exiles to the United States and Europe and by internal migrations within the country, which have profoundly transformed this metropolis with multiple faces [Iniguez, 2012].

Thus, the Cuban capital occupies an inescapable place within the research on Cuba. It is the place of the majority of field studies in the social sciences, whether it is film studies [Vincennot, 2009; Corsi, 2014; Kabous, 2020], the sociology of aging [Destremeau, 2021] or political sociology [Geoffray, 2014], or even the geography of housing and the real estate market [Pleyan, 2020; Jolivet, 2021]. The richness and multiple perspectives of the current studies demonstrate a real academic renewal, which will be the subject of the workshop.

In order to think about the dynamics of Havana, the round table will approach the Cuban capital from a comparative perspective that will allow us to get out of the Cuban exceptionalism. The geopolitical and cultural place of Havana in the Americas will be questioned, in order to reflect on the relations between Cuba and its capital in the American continent. The transamerican and transnational mobilities that cross Havana (migratory and tourist mobilities, solidarity trips) will also allow us to question the forms of urban production and their circulations.

This session aims to address the transformations underway in Cuba through the lens of its capital, Havana, through multidisciplinary approaches from different countries in the Americas and Europe. The workshop, which will be held in three languages (Spanish, French and English), will bring together young and more experienced researchers from different universities.
