Studies on the Americas and circulation of concepts: the case of sustainable development

Despite the relative antiquity of the concept, sustainable development is today a rapidly growing international field of research, in association with other more recent concepts such as the anthropocene or transition. Its analysis and that of its epistemological and institutional, or even political, uses is taking on a growing role in areal studies. The question of human development, and with it economic, social, political and spatial inequalities, and not only inequalities in the face of environmental problems, is also being modified. How do social and human science studies on and in the Americas contribute to structuring this vast field, both in France and internationally? The IdA's annual colloquium appears to be an excellent opportunity to address this contribution, by inviting three types of speakers to debate theorists working on the internationalisation of research and the circulation of concepts; institutional leaders (management of IFEA and CEMCA, management of the "Societies and Globalisation" department of IRD, IdA representation), who have an overall view of current research; researchers working on empirical aspects of sustainability from different disciplinary approaches (economics, geography, sociology), who broaden and question the field.
