Wandering through the "Gratte-ciel"
Urban Exploration
Organization: Camille Cordier (LARHRA - Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3) and Maxime Balaudé André (Triangle - SciencesPo Lyon)
Friday, June 16th, 2023, from 9:30am to 11:30am at Villeurbanne
In partenership with the Rize, the organisation committee offers you an urban exploration at the heart of the "Gratte-Ciel" (skycrapers) neighborhood in Villeurbanne. Built at the end of the 1920s, the working-class city - whose architecture was strongly influences by the American model, symbol of modernity - represents the emergence of skycrapers in France. This exploration will be the occasion to question the way french architects, at the beginning of the 20th century, have interpreted the American verticval expansion movement in order to redefine the urban landscapes of working-class cities. The exploration will be led by Aliénor Wagner, PhD student in history at the Université Gustave Eiffel, and whose thesis is about the neighborhood ("Living in the Villeurbanne Gratte-Ciel : from the origins (1930s) to today.
The city of Villeurbanne, adjacent to the city of Lyon and which extends west of the 3rd arrondissement, was elected "French capital of culture" in 2022 by the Ministère de l'Intérieur, and stands out for its innovative social urbanism. As part of the Congress, the historical Gratte-Ciel neighborhood is accessible from the universities in 20 minutes through tramway T1 or through metro B and metro A.
